How can we help animals thrive in our changing communities? During this engaging Traveling Scientist program designed for after-school settings and Expanded Learning programs, students investigate how human expansion impacts local animal species. Students meet native Orange County animal ambassadors, explore the characteristics and needs that help animals survive, and discover the important roles animals play in local ecosystems. Through discussion, diagrams, and live animal encounters, students examine how urban development affects the Coastal Sage Scrub ecosystem and explore how protected spaces such as regional parks and nature reserves help conserve biodiversity. Students finish by brainstorming ways they can help protect local habitats and wildlife.
