Scientists of the Sewers

Students investigate the important role microorganisms play in Orange County’s sanitation system. Working collaboratively, students tackle a simulated wastewater challenge by testing a sewer line to identify the source of a contaminant. They then use evidence from their investigation to design a solution that helps safeguard the system or develop an argument explaining how changing environmental factors can affect populations within an ecosystem.
Partner-Funded Program
Scientists of the Sewers is offered at no cost to eligible Orange County schools through funding provided by the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San).
Funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority scheduling and funding will be given to schools located in Cypress, Santa Ana, Newport Beach, and Buena Park. Teachers must submit a grant application to be considered for the program. Submission of an application does not guarantee funding or program availability.
