How can science and engineering help protect the environment? During this full-day field experience, students become environmental engineers as they investigate how human activities affect Irvine Regional Park. Through hands-on engineering challenges, pollution monitoring, and wildlife conservation investigations, students collect evidence, analyze data, and design solutions that help protect local ecosystems and native wildlife.

Field Investigations

  • Water Filtration Engineering: Design, build, and test a water filtration system while exploring how engineering can reduce pollution and improve water quality.
  • Pollution Monitoring Hike: Collect real environmental data to investigate air, sound, light, and plastic pollution throughout Irvine Regional Park and recommend solutions to reduce human impacts.
  • Wildlife Crossing Engineering: Meet native California mountain lions at the Orange County Zoo before designing and building model wildlife crossings that help animals safely navigate human-developed landscapes.
