Become a field ecologist at Santiago Oaks Regional Park! During this immersive field trip, students investigate whether plants and animals are adapted to survive in an oak woodland ecosystem. Through hiking, wildlife investigations, and evidence-based discussions, students evaluate how well a coast live oak tree, California kingsnake, and darkling beetle or millipede are suited to their habitat. Along the way, they explore how wildfire and human activities affect local ecosystems and discover why protecting natural spaces is important.
